Some Digestive Disorders and How to Identify Them

The digestive system is a critical component of the body’s functioning. The digestive system comprises of the tract running from the mouth, through the pharynx, esophagus, stomach, intestinal passages (small and large), rectum, and finally ends at the anus. The system is aided by different glands throughout the body, including the gall bladder, liver, and pancreas.

The prime function of the digestive system is to break down the food we intake into its constituent nutrients and distribute them throughout the body to facilitate growth, cell repair, and most importantly energy production.

It was revealed in a study by GI doctors (Gastrointestinal) that over 20 million people across the US were victims of some sort of chronic digestive issue.

4 Ailments That Concern the Digestive System

#1 Gastrointestinal Reflux Disease

Abbreviated as GERD, it is a medical condition that occurs when the acids from your stomach backwash into your mouth. The gastric acids frequently flow back into the esophageal passage.

Symptoms

  • Heartburn, usually after a meal

  • Chest pain

  • Regurgitating food and sour liquid

  • Feeling a lump in your throat

#2 Celiac Disease

Also known as celiac spruce or gluten-sensitive enteropathy, it is when the immune system reacts adversely to the presence of gluten in the body. Gluten is a wheat protein found in some cereals.

In patients with celiac disease, gluten triggers the small intestine into an immune response. The lining of the small intestine is damaged and over time it could lead to malabsorption. With the small intestine unable to absorb certain nutrients, it stunts growth in children and causes anemia, bone disorders, and joint pain in adults.

GI doctors do not recommend any particular treatment for celiac disease, except a gluten-free diet.

Symptoms

  • Bowel disorders like diarrhea and constipation

  • Uncharacteristic fatigue

  • Bloating and gassy stomach

  • Pain, nausea, and vomiting

#3 Irritable Bowel Syndrome

IBS is an ailment of the large intestine. It is a chronic condition that is best treated by conscious lifestyle changes and diet. Irritable Bowel Syndrome induces abnormal bowel movement and cramping/bloating. Note that IBS is not linked to colorectal cancer.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the lower abdomen

  • Cramping and bloating when having to pass out stool

  • Frequent diarrhea

  • Constipation

#4 Ulcerative Colitis

It is an inflammatory bowel disease that inflames and gives rise to sores in the innermost lining of your large intestine and rectum. These sores are known as ulcers and if let to fester without treatment can even incapacitate the individual. In a few rare cases, ulcerative colitis can lead to death.

Once again ulcerative colitis evades treatment and can only be controlled by reducing symptoms.

Symptoms

  • Presence of blood and/or pus in stool

  • Diarrhea

  • Pain in the lower abdomen and rectum

  • Some people report a persistent feeling of having to go but are unable to defecate once they are there
