In January 2011, Dr. Abbas Raza joined Digestive Disease Specialists, Inc. – Oklahoma’s largest and most comprehensive gastroenterology practice - as well as the medical staff of Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City. Dr. Raza completed a three year residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine and finished an additional three year fellowship program in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City. After practicing three years as a consultant gastroenterologist in Arkansas, he was selected for an advanced gastroenterology fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. During this training he gained further endoscopic experience in Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and Endoscopic Ultrasonography (EUS).
Dr. Raza’s areas of interest in general gastroenterology include diagnosis and management of gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) and screening for colorectal cancer, which is a leading cause of cancer related death in this country. He believes that colorectal cancer could be virtually eliminated if everyone eligible for screening participated. In addition to pancreatico-biliary diseases and ERCPs, he has a strong interest in the use of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) in the diagnosis and staging of gastrointestinal malignancies. He believes that this relatively new technique can have a significant clinical impact on the management of patients with many malignant and non-malignant gastrointestinal diseases. EUS provides the ability to not only visually stage these lesions, but has the ability to access the tumors with a needle to obtain a cytological sample by fine needle aspiration.
